Athens
History - Athens was founded in the year
3,000 B.C. The city lie at the top of a steep rocky
hill, today this hill is called Acropolis. The city
was named after the Greek goddess Athena.
During the 5th century BC it was
the cultural and artistic center of the classical
world.
In 1204 it was occupied by the Crusaders.
It wasn’t until 1456 that it was freed from
the Western rule when it was captured by the Turks.
In the war of 1821-32 it gained
freedom from the Turks.
In the year 1833 Athens became the
capital of Greece. The city started out with just
4,000 residents. Soon more and more people came to
the area. The architect Eduard Schaubert designed
a the boulevards in long straight lines, which made
it easier to get around the city.
As the city grew and prospered more and more people
came to live and work in the area. Athens is now highly
respected by many people and is a cultural and business
center of power. There are so many places of interest
that represent the ancient years that have been well
preserved in Athens. This leads to a very fine business
in Tourism for the area.
The people thrive and live and work in a city that
they are extremely proud of. After you visit the area
we are sure you will feel the same way too. There
is a special feeling about Athens. Perhaps it is all
the myths that surround the area or maybe it was because
it was dedicated to the Greek goddess,
Athena. Who knows? Maybe it’s the people that
live there, but you will see and feel it when you
are there. It truly is a very special city. One that
continues to attract many visitors all through the
year.
